If you upgrade to Catalina all 32 bit apps that you have will not work and will have to be updated to 64 bit or replaced. To see which apps will not work download and run the free GO64 app. If the number of apps that have to be replaced is too much then Mojave would be the better system to upgrade to.


Also you have the minimum RAM, 8 GB, and that will be a limitation with the newer systems. If you have the 5400 rpm drive or Fusion drive with the 5400 rpm drive that will be another bottleneck to performance.


If you have the 27" model you can add additional RAM from either Crucial.com or MacSales.com (OWC).


I'd seriously reconsider putting a lot of $$ into the Mac as it's 8 years old and considered Vintage by Apple.
