how do i restore messages

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're setting up a new iPhone and would like to have your messages restored. Depending on how your messages were saved on your old device will determine how you can recover them to your new iPhone.

If you had iCloud for Messages as described here: Use Messages in iCloud, you would simply need to sign into your iCloud account on your device and enable the feature in Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Messages. Once completed, they will sync to your device.

If you aren't using iCloud for Messages, and simply created a backup of your device, then you can restore your backup. You can read more about this process in the following articles:
