Series 5 stops charging after 5 minutes

I've just updated to WatchOS 8.3 and my Series 5 Apple watch stops charging 5 minutes after putting it on the charger puck.

Note that this issue did not occur on 8.2

Also note that I've cleaned both the watch and puck, restarted the watch multiple times, as well as unpaired and re-paired using the latest back-up.

Did not try to factory reset, as I'm not keen on losing my current watch setup.

Hi Astro,

Thank you for your reply.

I'm certain it's a software issue, as I've found the following workaround:

Place watch in Power Reserve mode and then place it on the charging puck. It will then proceed to reboot and then charge normally.

I'm not sure how many other Series 5 users are affected by this, but would really appreciate a fix in 8.3.1

Thank you, hope this helps anyone else with the same issue.

Hi GabiCrecan,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand your Apple Watch won't charge. If you have made sure that the charger's magnet is aligned with your watch, try charging with a different cable and power adapter. Change the source of where you're charging. If it continues to not charge, you can reach out to Apple or a service provider to run a diagnostic on your watch.

This has happened to everyone and we have all been told we need to buy a usb c wall charger as it was not in the box.

Yes this works but we should not be adding to the mountains of unnecessary E-waste as the watches should charge on all our old USB A chargers.

You now have just 1 wall charger and lead that works but do not consign all these perfectly good chargers to E-waste. They may well be working again by the end of this month

I had a Genius Bar appt for this. I can confirm that as soon as I tested it on an authentic Apple charger in the store (I’m traveling and only has the spare 3rd party one I keep in my travel bag with me) — as soon as it was on the Apple charger, the 5min timeout charge stop did not happen and charged normally. I ended up just buying the $29 cable to get thru the rest of the trip. Can confirm my partners watch, which has not yet updated to 8.3 is still working normally on the old chargers.

so this is 100% a software issue in 8.3 that killed 3rd party chargers. Hopefully this is fixed fast and soon!
