I am to purchase an Ipad as xmas gift to a teenager. What is the advantages of buying an Ipad air instead of an 'ordinary' Ipad ?

the first advantage of buying an ipad air is the processor, air have the a14 instead a13 on the regular ipad, the second advantage is the compatibility with the magic keyboard.
