2010 iMac as Display for 2020 MacBook Pro (M1)

Hey, I have a 2010, 24” iMac that I would like to use as a second display for my 2020 M1 MBP. I’ve got the proper DisplayPort cable and adapter to come out of the iMac into my MBP. Any way to connect the two? Thanks.

How to use a late 2009 27" iMac as a display for a 2020 Macbook Pro? I found this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8024535 It says my late 2009 27" iMac can be used as a second display for my 2020 Macbook Pro. It instructs me to use a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and a Thunderbolt or a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable. I purchased the adapter and Mini DisplayPort cable and this configuration does not work. ON the box of the adapter in fine print it shows Mini DisplayPort in red with an X saying it is not compatible. That must be why it did not work for me. So, apparently the adapter requires a Thunderbolt cable. However, I read on the Apple website that any Mac older than 2011 in not Thunderbolt compatible. So, does that mean I'm out of options? or Will the Thunderbolt cable work to activate the Mini DisplayPort?

How can I use my 2017 27 inch iMac as second display for my 2020 MacBook Air? I have a 2017 27 inch iMac and I want to use it as a second display for my 2020 13 inch intel MacBook Air. I have tried connecting them using a thunderbolt usb-c port and using target display but this does not seem to work. Is there any other way that I could do this?

No. Target Display Mode was dropped by Apple for all Macs 2020 or newer. You would need a 2019 or newer Mac to be able to use an older Mac as a display.

+1 OT is 100% correct, your old 2010 is too old and your new 2020 is too new. I recommend that you simply purchase an external display to use with the 2020 iMac. This is much more simple to setup, does not require expensive cabling and is not expensive.
