iPhone 13 Duplicate Songs - Repeated Failure of Apple to Fix iTunes

If downloaded music was all we had on our phone, deleting the library and reinstalling it or iTunes would be no problem. But for those of us with an IQ above bean dip, we have other media not purchased from Apple on our phones, and deleting the songs to fix this historical iTunes bug is no longer satisfactory. You broke it, then fix it Apple!

Hey tt2,

I thought I'd just give you an update on this.

So, I just reset the 13Pro Max to factory settings and reinstalled from a computer back up. That seemed to be the easiest way, I think. I'm not overly techy (but not totally useless with the computer and gadgets) and this seemed like the easiest. Either way, deleting and restoring 40,000 songs was going to take a while, so I figured, might as well start over from scratch.

It all looks good now. No duplicates and album artwork has been restored.

There must be an issue with the iPhone to iPhone wireless sync that's the big issue.

I appreciate your help and will look you up on here for my next crisis. ;-)

I appreciate you advice and time (especially since Apple seems unconcerned for some reason). Thanks.

Most likely something crashes when trying to remove 40,000 songs in one go. Restoring as a new device, and then loading up again in stages is likely to be more successful. See the Break up large transfers method from Corrupt iPod Classic - Apple Community.

Well, good for you. By far the bulk of those who respond to these questions are volunteers, not Apple employees, so perhaps you should bear that in mind before you launch off on one. And just what did Spspat do to you to deserve your ire?

As someone who has spent fourteen years helping here, I already have a feel for where this thread is going, but one thing is for certain, you need to be specific about the nature of your issue because so far, all you've actually stated is "duplicate songs", with the implication being that you have duplicates on your phone but (possibly) not in your iTunes Library. Everything else you've said is simply badly directed insults, or a red herring. If you truly believe for example, that "genres" is germane to your issue, perhaps you could explain why, because I can't see the relevance.

So - if you have duplicate songs on your phone, but not in your Library, what steps have you taken so far to fix the issue and what, if anything did it achieve?

  • Did you try tt2's suggestions and if so, what happened?
  • Do the songs have anything in common that sets them apart from other songs that are not duplicated? For example, are they all from one supplier or source, or are they all songs I would not like to listen to?
  • Is it all songs on an album, or only some? Is it every album?

O, and the Apple Associate answers are always the same non-answer that we caused the problem or copy your iTunes media files (never tell you to copy your playlist), delete your backup and iTunes files, and then copy back your original media files.

this is a software bug, so we needed a developer to answer our question.

if you are using Windows as I, open Powershell and use the new DOS command, Del to remove the duplicate copy.

I suspect there is a problem when a new device was added or phone backed up new purchases to the computer media folder although the PC already had downloaded the new file to the Media folder before you attached the iPhone to it.

Thanks.

I finally had some time to try your suggestions. Unfortunately, they didn't work for me.

I think I'm at the point of removing all the tunes on my phone and restoring the back up I made from my old phone.

I tried to remove the tunes, following the advice on a YouTube video, last week but the steps on the video didn't work for me either.

If I connect my phone to my computer/iTunes and select all the songs on my connected device (iPhone), NOT my iTunes library, will it remove the songs on my phone without screwing something else up?

I forgot to mention that all of the album covers, which are correct in iTunes, are mixed up on my iPhone right now too.

Thanks for your help,

Pat

As long as the songs are in your iTunes library, and ideally backed up, you can remove them from the phone, then copy back again. When iTunes is set to sync your library to the device you may have trouble using the iTunes interface to remove them from it. That can be done from Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Music, or you restore as a new device, then restore your backup and resync selected media. The second option is more thorough, and might be more likely to fix any odd issues with artwork.

The way that I tried to remove the songs before, and I tried a few times again this morning, is to go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Music>All Songs, slide left and delete. This is a user to user support forum. There are some community specialists who will try to answer some of the threads that haven't been picked up by the community, but they generally post links to support articles and don't in detailed troubleshooting or recording bugs. There is no active involvement here from the iTunes/Music development teams.
