The actual "charger" is built-in the Apple iPhones & iPads. What Apple provides is a power adapter. Regardless, just about any adapter should work. What do you consider "hot?" It is not unusual for the iPad to heat up during the charging process, but it should not get too hot to touch. If it does, it could indicate a faulty battery in the iPad.

The support article you came here from provided you with some of this information. As you know the 4th gen iPad Air (currently the latest model) came with a 20W USB-C power adapter. Using a 40W adapter should not be an issue as the internal charger will prevent any overcharging. However, if you are concerned, you can always purchase a replacement adapter from Apple.
