Backup First:
Everything is expected to transfer over. Nothing is to be deleted. However, errors can occur. So, backup your iPhone, that way you can have something to restore your iPhone from, should the update fail.
Use a Computer to Update:
Have a Computer Handy?: Try using a computer to update the iPhone. You'd power it off, than then use this link: Update your iPhone Using a Computer - User Tip
Welcome to Apple Support Community!
The difference between the two:
Update using Mac or PC: Just installs a updated iOS of the current Software
Restoring using Mac or PC: Erases old software and installs a brand new iOS.
In terms, Updating doesn't remove the passcode lock
Restoring will remove the whole OS, so that in turn removes the passcode lock

If you do not have a Mac or PC, and your updated to 15.2
iOS 15.2 comes with a feature where you can now erase your device by entering the passcode wrong too many times and an option will appear for you to erase and then enter your Apple ID password to complete.
