Remove supervised state after restore the data

Hi all.

My school is using AC2 to supervise iPad for students’ iPad. After they have graduated, we will unlock their device to am unsupervised state. However, we have a unique case. While other unsupervised process run smoothly, there is one iPad that keep returned to the supervised state after the students data restored from their iCloud.

i have erase all contents and settings using AC2 but after logged to the Apple ID and data restored, the iPad shows in supervision mode. Any clue?

That is the supervision identity. You'll need to wipe and set up as a new device.

Unfortunately, this isn't possible. As CrackinChris said, you'll want to use Apple School Manager+MDM (like Jamf School or Mosyle) to do this simply. It will also remove the supervised identity markings.

So, this is what I did.

I remove the AC2 configuration profile from the iPad but the state is still supervised.
Backup the device
Erase contents and settings
It returns no supervision state
restore the backup and it becomes supervised again.

As far as I know, i can remove the supervision state using erase contents. Now, where is the step where I can restore without management as you said?

CMIIWW, so any data generated during the supervision stage can only be restored with supervision properties embedded? So, if I want to use the iPad with the same Apple ID, i won't be able to restore the data without disabling the supervision mode. Is it true?

Supervised mode doesn't affect the device itself. It simply allows for more options with management. All of my personal devices are set up in supervised mode.

I see. But the organisation name appears on the General page. So that is the one we tried to remove.

I did that and it wiped out. The problem is that I need to restore the backup data without the identity restored.

This is a common scenario. The backup has the management embedded. You will need to restore, remove the management again and force a backup with management removed. Then you should be able to wipe the device and restore without management. If that fails, unfortunately, you will need to set the device up as a new device.

For the future, you'd be better using Apple School Manager and a live Mobile Device Management over-the-air system for this really. Means you won't have to plug into Apple Configurator all the time - you only need that to register the device into Apple School Manager. You also won't have this backup/restore issue.

Also means you'd be able to wipe & restore over the internet and get it back to a working state without using AC2.

Correct. It sounds like the state is embedded in the backup. This is partly by design to prevent loss of corporate data. You'll need to wipe the device and set up as new.

Thank you for the advise. Unfortunatelly, in Indonesia, we don't have Apple School Manager. We are doing manual with AC2. Hopefully, Apple will cover our country soon.
