Problem opening some pics in received in a text

I have an iPhone 7 and I recently discovered that some of the images that I have either sent or received in a text message are no longer opening, even though it states "Tap to Download." I notice that the pics are in various formats, HEIC, .png, and jpeg. I attempted to resolve the problem by going to Settings /Messages/Send & Receive, and performed "sign out" and "sign in." Unfortunately, that did not allow me to download the old images that I had received or sent. I also attempted to resolve the problem by going to Settings/Formats/Camera Capture and switched to "Most Compatible" and that also did not solve the problem, at least as it relates to having the ability to download pics received in old messages.

I should point out that I am successful in downloading some pics that are sent and received in a text message. So whatever the problem, it is not affecting everything that is sent and received.

Any assistance that can be provided in resolving my dilemma is appreciated.

Hi alsupc,

We understand you're unable to view pictures in the Messages app, they just show "Tap to download". We're happy to offer some guidance.

To start, we'd recommend restarting the device if you haven't already done so. Restarting usually fixes the issue where pictures don't automatically download when they come in.

Restart your iPhone

You'll also want to check your message settings to make sure you don't have it set to delete things after a certain time. Go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages, and make sure it is set to Forever.

You'll also want to make sure the software on the device is up to date.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you're still unable to download pictures in the Messages app, we'd recommend contacting Apple for assistance: Get Support

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Eric-K,

Thank you for attempting to assist me.

After reading your response, I realize that I may not have made my problem clear. I do not have a problem opening or downloading photos that are currently sent to me in text messages. I also did not have a problem downloading photos or that were received in older text message. The problem I am experiencing is when I go back to view those photos that were received in an old message, I am no longer able to view or download the photo. Instead of the photos displaying, I receive a box that says "Tap to Download" and I notice that it indicates that the file/photo is in HEIC format. Unfortunately, nothing happens when I tap to download. I also not able to download photos in a text message that I sent to someone because I receive the same "Tap to Download" and it indicates that the file/photo is in HEIC format. This problem only started occurring recently, so I am assuming it might be connected with a recent iOS update.

Sorry for the confusion.
