Sync Through iCloud:
Sign in to the same Apple ID on the iMac and on the iPhone, and then enable Photos in iCloud Settings on both. Being synced. As a result. Photos will be accessible between both both devices. Note that If you that thousands of photos, it may take some time.

Either via iCloud (see above).
Or via a local library by selecting the system Photos library in a Finder window, set the desired options in the Photos tab and sync to an iOS device. Or select a local folder there and sync that.
