My wife and I were going to watch a movie together via shareplay. I rented the movie and the connect via FaceTime and activated SharePlay. It seemed to want to charge her for the rental too. It said she had to rent the movie and offered the same rental price as I paid. We are set up for family sharing. Is that the way it is supposed to work? Was there something I should have done?

There is no mention of Family Sharing with movie rentals.

"If you watch a purchased movie or TV show, all SharePlay participants must also have purchased the item in order to watch it together. "
If you purchased the movie then presumably if you were using Family Sharing so each participant met the above criteria (access to a purchased copy, though that's not exactly what it says), you could Shareplay it.
Thanks. The information about watching purchased content answered what I was looking for. Understandable but disappointing. If I want to watch a rented movie with grandkids I need to find a way to pay for their rental.
If you are part of a Family Sharing group I would call Apple and make sure this is possible but you might find purchasing a copy of the movie may be simpler and/or cheaper than having them all rent it or you gifting money to them. Some of this will depend upon hte number of children and if they are all sharing one device or if we're talking about 4 different accounts here.
