Taxes with trade in

I just upgraded to iPhone 13 with trade in. I was charged pre-credit taxes on full amount. T-Mobile said everyone does that no matter where I buy the device.

That is correct. Trade-in credit does not reduce price of the phone, just

the amount that you have to pay out of your pocket. Taxes are on the total price.
