The spinning rainbow means that you need to wait as the Mac is doing another task (like loading the file) until that task finishes. To fix it if it's displayed for a long time, force quit the app with the document open (cmd-alt-esc or Apple-force quit) and try loading it again. If it still shows the spinning ball, try on a different computer if you have one or restart and try again.

New problem ? What has changed on the computer ?

Old problem ? What has the user done to try and fix it ?

Restart in Safe Mode and then run this way to 5 - 7 minutes. Then restart in Normal Mode

Safe mode may help you resolve or isolate problems that you’re having with your Mac.

When you start up in safe mode, your Mac prevents some software, such as startup items, from loading, and it performs a check of your startup disk. Your Mac may take longer to start up because of the check.
