Hi tigrino,

Other than the Technology Preview version (Mojave 10.14 or later), Safari is not a stand-alone download. It is a component of the OS, thus you cannot move beyond the version that comes with the last release of High Sierra.

Getting to your issue, why do you feel that the version of Safari your have is defective?

HI tigrino,

"Because when I type in Safari the cursor jumps to the end of the sentence" - Not following you.

Where are you typing in Safari? Do you mean that you are trying to type in the word "Safari" somewhere? Or, do you mean that you are in the "Safari" app itself and trying to type in a word?

Presume that you mean you are in the "Safari" app itself. If so, where is it that you are trying to "type" such that it can jump "to the end of the sentence"? A web browser is not typically where one imagines typing sentences, so I am having a difficult time wrapping my head around the problem you are describing.

Apologies for my unclear explanations. Perhaps I can quote an example to facilitate the exchange.

Lets assume that I wish to surf the network to search for "The Romans". I tap on the browser Safari and when I am prompted in the space provided I enter the words "The Romans". I then realize that actually I wanted to search "the ancient Romans" which requires the inserting of the word ancient after the "the" and before "Romans". For some reasons the cursor jumps to the end of the word "Romans" barring me to rectify the string of words. Therefore I need to delete the whole string and retype again "the ancient Romans". Is that clear enough?

Morning tigrino,

I am following you now. Another detail to pin down though. In regards to "when I am prompted in the space provided" there is a distinction to clarify.

Upon first launching Safari, there are numerous options in regards to what screen will appear first. If your browser is set to initially come up with the default start page, then the "space provided" for your search would be at the top of the browser.

However, if you have setup your browser to instead launch straight to a search engine homepage (DuckDuckGo, Bing, Google, etc.) then the "space provided" is all together different.

Please provide some detail around where you "enter the words"?

Since I now know you are initiating a search, a key factor is the underlying search engine being used.

In the Safari menu up top, click on Safari > Preferences > Search and let us know what your Search engine is set to.

Be aware that the setting you have here effects which search engine is used when you type into the address bar search field, as in my first screenshot.

If you are instead doing your search on a providers homepage, as in my second screenshot, the Safari setting you have for Search engine does not effect that.

--------------------------

Depending on which of the two scenarios above you are facing, I would suggest this.

1) If you are searching as in my first screenshot, try changing the Safari setting for Search engine to a different provider, and see if that makes any difference.

2) If you are searching as in my second screenshot, they navigation to a different search providers homepage. For example, if you are using Google, go to https://duckduckgo.com or https://startpage.com instead, and see if the problem persists.

Many thanks for your reply

1: As a default Strat page I am using MSN which at the topo provides provides space to type my search.

2: As a search engine I am using BING.

3: Changing the Search engine to different providers doesn't make any difference.

4: However if as you suggested I change the start page from MSN to duckduckgo.com the typing error does not occur.

I am not too keen to use the duckduck start page since it does not provide the news highlights of MSN. Incidentally I did use Bing with MSN for more then five years without encountering any problem, until early last year when the "cursor jumping" arouse. Perhaps I should check with MSN if they are aware of the defect.

In any event I wish to tank you for your kind support.

Hi tigrino,

I went to both msn.com and bing.com and can confirm that I see the same irritating behavior that you do!

Type in "the romans". Cursor back to just before the "r" to add in "ancient" and it immediately starts suggesting what it thinks would be helpful. Terrible user experience!

I tried changing various Safari settings, to see if they had any effect, but none did. Someone wiser may chime in with a solution, but I am not seeing it.

"Perhaps I should check with MSN if they are aware of the defect." - They will say it is a feature, rather than a bug! 😊

As a quick update, I jumped over to a Windows computer and the Edge browser, Going to MSN.com and Bing.com, this issue does not manifest itself.

It may well be Safari related. That or Microsoft intentionally made it a bad experience for any browser other than Edge! 😊

I kept thinking it was a Safari setting associated with Search...

However, turning off these various options, in turn, did nothing to help this issue.
