using an ethernet connection between Macbooks

Is it better to use a hardwire connection for transferring files etc from a MacBook Pro to the new MacBook Pro Max?

Yes, it is better to use a hardwire connection since there is less risk of something going amiss than with a wireless connection (interference, dropped connection etc.). And, depending on the Ethernet cable you use (CAT 5 or CAT 6, the latter being better), it is often faster than Wi-Fi.
