FaceTime poor audio

Here is the fix:

Go to Library>Preferences>Audio and delete all files in the Audio folder. You must have quit Facetime before you do this. Then start FaceTime and the problem will be fixed.

Please Have Apple add this advice to their troubleshooting page.

Yes, my Macs FaceTime audio from the internal mic and speakers is all garbled and incoherent from the other person and to the other person. It is fine if I use an external source like my AirPods Pro or other Bluetooth headphones. Like the original poster it's all calls, whether, FaceTime audio, FaceTime video or calls from my iPhone with the internal mic and speakers. Really quite annoying. I had this from Monterey 12.1 and is no better with the latest 12.2 release.

My issue as well. 2019 iMac, Monterey 12.2, but same issue since 12. If it's a clue, the start up sound is now crackly as well. AND when I do FaceTime with my AirPod Pros, the audio is fine.

Updating to macOS 12.3 fixed the problem for me. Have you tried this yet?

I'm having the same issue with FaceTime using the internal microphone. It works normally with AirPods. I have 2016 MBP with the latest version of Monterey.

Serious issues here, too. I have a Mac Mini (M1, 2020), upgraded today from Big Sur (waited a LONG time so that I could avoid junk like this). Video quality (my video, outbound) on Zoom is horrible compared with Big Sur. Is "not good" on Teams but so-so. On FaceTime, video quality is great but audio is TERRIBLE. The person I've called is scared by it: my voice is about 2 octaves deeper, like some kind of serial killer using cloaked sound. Same exact thing happens when I make or answer calls using my Mac (calls from iPhone). I know it uses FaceTime to answer the iPhone's call on my Mac so it seems like FaceTime is a huge part of the problem, but then I also have the video quality issues (my video, outbound) on Zoom and Teams.

The deletion of files in Library/Preferences/Audio seemed to work for me, and then reverted.

But now this seems to have solved it for me! It's the drastic slowed-down voice from my side (mic) that was plaguing me.

I've been having the same issue as Stephen. Our details are the same.

One additional audio-related issue. Since the 12.1 update, SnagIt can no longer record System Audio when creating video screen captures.

Hi - I am having the same problem here and all the details are the same. I have an iMac 2017 and since upgrading to macOS 12.1 I now find that FaceTime is unusable. The audio is very crackly and broken up making it unusable. The person I Facetime with can also hear their own voice making the crackly and broken sound. Video quality in FaceTime is fine. My internet connection is also very good so it is definitely not the speed affecting this.

Other audio on the iMac works perfectly, and video calls in Skype, Teams, zoom and GMeet are also very good.

I contacted Apple Support on Feb.2 (by phone) since this issue was brought up a long time ago. They gave me a case no. but I didn't had time to follow up with them since then. Hopefully they are working on fixing the issue.

Hello @EE4567 - I just tried doing what you suggested and it didn't fix the problem. In the audio folder, I had two files that I removed and when started and tried FT, the problem is the same.

You are lucky. It didn't for me. I reformatted my computer at the end of 2021 and I am in the middle of large projects so I can't risk it yet to try seeing if reinstalling OS from scratch would help...

I hope there is a real fix for this. It is very annoying.

There is a clear software issue here - can you advise when it will be fixed please team apple?
