How do I restore a small hiragana/katakana table that was on my desktop until the last update killed it and I cannot find it again. I used my standard keyboard ( not japanese) but I could type a few words using that hiragana table. I don't want to use the full japanese keyboard, just that small table was super. now it's gone

You are looking in the wrong place. Forget about the keyboard preferences pane.

Instead go to the top right corner of your screen where the "flag" menu is and select Japanese there. You should see something like I already posted (with less keyboards perhaps), which I post again below. If yours is different, please post picture of it.

Thanks for the prompt answer. I use Monterey12.0.1 onmy iMac Retina4k. I think that upgrading the OS to Monterey got rid of my Japanese table: it looked like an icon that I could move on my desktop, giving me hiragana/katakana at will. using my usual canadian/french input source, I would type the japanese character and it would show in the text, without having to change input source. it was extremely convenient. I don't want to switch to a full japanese keyboard ( or even the keyboard viewer), as my apple keyboard is already overwritten to show russian cyrillic when needed.

I really miss that small japanese table ( used it for the last 2 more years) but can't remember how I got hold of it.

Thanks for the help.
