Activation Lock

I have an older iPad and am trying to sign on and get the Activation Lock Message. I put in the apple ID and Password used to set up this device, but get incorrect Apple ID or Password. Only thing I am thinking is that the e-mail used to originally set up this device is no longer active. Any thoughts?

The email being active doesn't matter, it just needs to be the same Apple ID and password used when you set it up. When you see the Activation Lock screen, does the masked email address look familiar? See this for additional information about Activation Lock. How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support
