I have an older version of Final Cut Pro (that was purchased at an Apple Store) on an old MacBook that I need to transfer to a new computer (and then update). How do I do it (since again my FCP was not purchased online but at a physical location)?

If you purchased the application in an Apple Store it sounds as if it is the legacy Final Cut Studio software. If this is the case it will not work on a new computer.
The new computer is a MacBook Pro. I was told from an Apple rep before I bought the new MacBook that I wouldn't have to repurchase FCP. He said I could update it once I get the new computer. Just wanted to know the easiest way to do it.
The current version of Final Cut Pro is only sold through the online Mac App Store. When it’s purchased you use your Apple ID and password to buy the software. If you did this, you can get an updated copy of the software by logging into the App Store with your Apple ID. Click the button in the lower left. In your Account Purchased page find the application you bought and download it from there.
Yes. The version of Final Cut Studio that included Final Cut Pro 7 cannot be updated to the current version of FCP. They are separate applications.
A version which came in a physical box or bundled with a computer that shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier can't be converted directly. Click here and ask the iTunes Store staff for assistance.
