Trying to get iPad mini to update beyond 12.5.5 it doesn't even try to fetch. Says it is up to date

I just received a new MacBook for Christmas and it linked to this mini instead of my iPhone which has everything on it.... I would like to link to my iPhone instead. How do I go about it?
