on the mail app I signed in with passwords to my gmail and yahoo mail accounts…nothing appears…did not flag mail in icloud storage but counted on google and yahoo to migrate my mail.

Remember that gmail and Yahoo require app specific passwords to work with the Apple mail app. Go to each of their websites for the simple process of generating these one time passwords.
Mail is a really just portal to your existing web mail accounts; it mirrors what the web accounts do and allows you to do the usual email activities with them.
Try removing and completely rebuilding the accounts from scratch. That usually establishes a good connection allowing Mail to display your web mail folders and such and returning you to proper functionality.
Logout and remove account and start logging in again. That might resolve your problem.

Is your Yahoo account IMAP or POP? If POP it will require a special process to setup.
