iMac 2013 updated to Monterey after a today's security update restarted to High Sierra

I updated my iMac to Monterey and all was okay, today there was a security update and when my iMac restarted was on High Sierra and a desktop with app icon and files that I had in 2015 I think. What I can do now? It's absurd!

Mojave Security update seems in a loop I've got a late 2012 iMac which I recently updated from High Sierra to Mojave. Semed like it was going to be okay until I saw that I needed to run a security update. which was about 8 hours ago. Since then, all I've seen on the screen is the apple logo (no progress bar) which stays on for maybe 5-10 minutes, and then the screen goes black. This just repeats that process. Seems like it's trapped in that loop. Is there anything I can do? I've got a time machine backup drive so I'm of the thinking that if I need to just reformat and start over, I can do that. Reinstalling applications will be painful but may help me purge what I don't need, too. What are my options at this point?

Update Hangs: Late 2015 21.5" iMac from High Sierra to Catalina or Monterey I'm trying to update my uncles 21.5" late 2015 iMac from High Sierra to Monterey which is supposed to be the last OS it will work with. When that failed, I tried Catalina but met with the same fate. I updated my wife's mid 2015 MBP to Monterey without any issues so thought I'd do the same for my uncle. This is what I did.. .. Via an Ethernet connection.. .. Disconnected all external devices Ran Disk Utility to verify there were no issues with the internal hard drive Found a link to Monterey on the Apple App Store (you can no longer find it by searching the App Store, it appears they have taken it down but you can find a link directly to it) Downloaded the install Monterey app, it was something like 45gig if I recall Ran the install Monterey app Got the typical install screen and progress bar and let it run...takes around a half hour or more as the progress bar moves to the right to the end of its travel and then sits there with less than a minute to complete It stayed at less than a minute to complete for a good 30-40 minutes until I finally shut down via the power button on the back of the iMac Pressed the power button to restart it and got the black screen with the install progress bar and said it had about 26 minutes to go so I let it go but the same thing happened when it got to the end of the progress bar. I did this with Catalina too, got the same results. There is no indication at this point if anything is happening or not I finally gave up and reinstalled High Sierra via his backup drive. I need to load a more recent OS since Safari no longer has compatibility with many of the financial websites he uses and High Sierra no longer gets security updates. Since Apple states his iMac is compatible with Monterey, why won't it complete the update? I've read articles about this and did in fact try going the Safe Boot route but to no avail. I did a PRAM reset to no avail. I was wondering if it might be a certificate date issue where Catalina or Monterey OS on the Apple servers is looking for a newer iMac but Apple says it should work. Help please.

Monterey update 12.6.1 will not install Monterey 12.5.1 is installed and running well. I receive a notice every day that I should install the update to Monterey 12.6.1 shown below: I click download and shows its downloading, the iMac restarts but it is still running version 12.5.1 I have 300 GB storage free of a 500GB startup drive I have deleted previous Mac OS installer apps from the iMac Only Apple apps are installed Ran disk First Aid from recovery partition Etrecheck does not show any warnings or notes and performance is marked as Excellent My Mac is eligible for Ventura so a Monterey update should be compatible. As this update contains security updates I would normally update, but I cant Should I just ignore this update?

Go into the Startup Disk System Preferences to see if you have more than one bootable macOS volume to select. Maybe you are dual booting this iMac without realizing it.

Is there any third party antivirus, cleaning or any other maintenance apps installed?
