Apple account itself does not need an authenticator, it uses 2 factor authentication with codes and Keychain.
If you also have a Microsoft outlook account you might want to install the MS authenticator app.
Ditto Google account, install their app.
You may be able to mix and match but keeping it simple is recommended.
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm having trouble with my "Ring" account. On both my iMac (os Catalina 10.16.7) and my new PhoneSE 2nd generation software version 15.1. The login for ring says it's sent a code to my Authenticator App. Nothing comes up on either device.
I have a Google account.
It must think you have an authenticator app installed, try installing Google Authenticator and tell your Ring account which one to use.
See;
"After you’ve downloaded an authenticator app, go to Ring.com on your computer, laptop or a mobile browser. You’ll need to have your Ring account password handy to complete this process. Your username and password for Ring.com are the same ones you use for the Ring app."
Thanks.Problem solved .Happy Christmas
Well done 🎄
