Hot Corner - Desktop fix?

I've been having an issue for a while now with the "Hot Corner - reveal desktop" shortcut not working (the desktop is revealed, but I can't interact with anything on it while the Hot Corner is in use). I've tried

  • Logging out and in the user account
  • Restarting the Finder, then the whole Mac
  • Changing Hot Corners settings
  • Changing Mission Control settings
  • Upgrading the OS to the most current version (Monterey v12.1)
  • Resetting the RMC and PRAM

and nothing works. In reseacrhing the issue I found this page which has a terminal command that the author says worked for him: https://buijs.pro/hot-corners-and-gestures-dont-work/, namely:

Type or copy: defaults write com.apple.dock mcx-expose-disabled -bool FALSE to activate the mission control function.
Then type: killall Dock to stop the Dock that will then automatically be restarted. Only then the Exposé activation will take effect.

I'm willing to try it but using Terminal commands always makes me overly cautious - can anyone conform that what the author is describing is unlikely to cause any stystem damage?

Thanks in advance...

That link you reference is not dated, and refers to OS X...

the Mac has been using the macOS since 2018, so I would be suspect yes.

You make no mention what OS you were running prior to your "upgrade" to Monterey...

it never pays to get too far behind, many things change along the way.
