I got a brand new iPhone SE today and I turned off Night mode and using the phone in Dark Mode only, still when I turn ON the auto brightness, it does not work. The phone goes completely dark (even in bright sunlight) and difficult to read. Please suggest

Auto brightness works around a norm that you set manually.
Leave auto on. Set it for comfort manually. Light and dark surroundings dhould adjust it around that norm.
It has to be part manual as auto would never suit everyone.
Try this
Set the brightness to ne comfortable for your room. Take it to the window, bring it back. It should be too bright for a few moments.
Occasionally adjust it.
It is not set-and-forget.

Are you turning it on in Settings, Accessibility?
By default it is turned on anyway
The Automatic in Settings, Display & Brightness is for Auto Dark/Light mode
I use Dark mode and Automatic is Off there. I meant in the Accessibility settings only. If it is On, there is Nil brightness
Have you tried manually upping the brightness as a start point?
Use the control center
which I think is swipe up from screen bottom on SE
I can manually increase brightness. But that’s not my problem. Auto brightness feature doesn’t work the way it should work.
If you have it open at Settings Display & brightness while you do the above test, you should see the adjuster move when you let it get darker again
Thank you so very much for your inputs and your time. But that was my bad coz I was a having a screen protector which was causing the issue. Now it’s working well after I removed it.

With iphone SE and similar the screen protector also covers the selfie camera.
