NewAirpods pro won’t connect to phone

I got new AirPods Pro for Christmas and they will not connect to my iPhone 12 I have the latest update and the light on the case of the AirPods is white so that means they’re ready to pair. My boyfriends AirPods connect to my phone super quick. Return?
