Apple raw bug 16:9 photos

Hey, how can I get around the software bug that does not allow you to export from iphone 16:9 apple raw photos?

More detail: when you take a high quality Apple raw photo (.DNG) it should export as such to other apps and to your Mac for example. This works fine with photos taken in 4:3 format apple raw. However, for the 16:9 apple raw, they export from iphone as JPG to Mac in much worse quality. 1. Apple, please fix this! 2. Is there a way to get around this bug?

Greetings chiscarul,

We understand that you are having some difficulty importing some ProRaw photos to your Mac, and we'd like to help.

Are you importing your photos using the Photos app on your Mac, Image Capture, or something else? To transfer ProRaw photos to your Mac, or any other Apple device, with the .dng file format you will need to use AirDrop. You can view information on this in About Apple ProRAW, specifically the "Share ProRAW photos section":

"To transfer the original ProRAW file from your iPhone to another iPhone, iPad, or your Mac, use AirDrop. If you edited the photo in the Photos app and then you share it, you'll share a JPG file. To share the original ProRAW file from the Photos app on your iPhone, tap Share, tap Duplicate, tap Edit, tap Revert, then share the photo using AirDrop."

Take care.

I think the problem is there is no such thing as a 16:9 raw file. The raw file will always use the full sensor, so to make it 16:9 a crop will be applied.

This will make it an edited file, so when shared (as described by chiscarul above) it will be shared as jpg.

To transfer it as raw to your mac, you need to revert it first as described, then crop it again once you have it on your mac.

Or you can use iCloud to transfer, but then you need to pay for a plan.

After shooting it 16:9 on iPhone, what are the steps of converting it (again on iPhone) to a 4:3 and sending it RAW with AirDrop on Mac? I am not sure about this step: iphone 16:9 to iphone 4:3. Because you can't revert: this is the way it was shot. I know that in fact it is a cropped 4:3 but how can the iPhone be made to believe that you have now the original RAW 4:3, unedited. Please be so kind and try it yourself before replying from the 16:9 RAW photo on iPhone to seeing the final .DNG file on mac.
