Is there a way I can update my iOS from 9.3.5 to the recent one? I bought my son a refurbished iPad and it’s saying that all the apps are incompatible.

The first generation iPad Air is too old to receive recent version of iPadOS. Here is a list of iPad devices that can receive the latest version: iPad models compatible with iPadOS 15.2 - Apple Support
