SIM card not supported

How do I get my phone to accept my SIM card. So my cousin just gave me his iPhone cause he decided to up grade, while trying to set it up I got my apple ID password wrong, a message popped up saying my apple account had been locked. Long story short am trying to put my SIM in, but my phone keeps saying, not supported.
