As Drew_7 states, if your laptop is using the Chrome OS (Operating System) you cannot install iTunes on it. But if you're using Windows (operating system) on the laptop, the Chrome browser that you mention is irrelevant. It plays no part in iTunes.

Let's establish the current situation:

    • can you open iTunes on your computer? If so, go to the iTunes menu Help/Check for Updates. If there is an update available, it will tell you so and give you the option to download it
    • if there is no Help/Check for Updates, that suggests that you downloaded iTunes from the Microsoft Store, rather than directly from Apple. So where did you download your copy of iTunes from?

if neither of the above helps, then look in Help/About iTunes (if it's there) and tell us which version of iTunes is listed.

Okay I am confused!

Is it possible to delete iTunes from computer and re-download? Would I lose my whole library of music if I did that?

Yes, you can delete iTunes and then reinstall it. That would not affect your music, which is stored separately to iTunes.

However, before you do that, let's establish one or two things because your original question was "how to update iTunes <...> on a laptop?" (Still, Chrome has nothing to do with iTunes. I'm going to guess that Drew_7 is a Mac user, not a Windows one and did not know that Chrome is a browser as well as an operating system. Hence some of the confusion I think.)

I had the app on my desktop and go into iTunes through that.

I don't understand what you mean by that. iTunes - the programme on your computer can be referred to as an app, but if that is so, then what do you mean by go into iTunes through that? Do you mean the iTunes Store, where you buy music?

Aha! (Lightbulb moment.) Which version of Windows are you using?

  • Is your iTunes programme working? If so, which version of iTunes do you currently have installed (in iTunes, go to Help/About iTunes to find out)?
  • Have you been using your browser (Chrome in your case) to get to the iTunes Store? If so, what is the reason?

Okay I am confused! I downloaded iTunes on Windows years ago. Now I use the browser Chrome. I had the app on my desktop and go into iTunes through that. When I went to the menu on iTunes nothing responds even though I can play my music. (This was yesterday evening) I'm sure I've gone through apple.com to get into my account but now I can't even do that.

OK, just tried to use shortcut on my desktop and it didn't even open.

Is it possible to delete iTunes from computer and re-download? Would I lose my whole library of music if I did that? Thanks for any answers or suggestions.

Thanks for your response. I've come to the conclusion that I have to delete it from my computer and redownload iTunes. I don't know how I'm going to do that being that the icon on the desktop isn't working now. I have Windows 10 as my operating system. but this is what I'm going to try to do. I have solved a couple of things through joining Apple music temporarily. Thank you for your help.
