Take off the cap (not the tip), and plug the lightning port into the iPad. Done. If there is no cap or lightning port, you purchased the wrong Apple Pencil. Your iPad is only compatible with the Apple Pencil (1st generation). The 2nd generation has flat edges, which magnetically snap to iPad Pro models from 2018 (A12X) or later, or iPad Air (4th generation) (A14) devices, and those devices have USB-C ports, so aren’t compatible with the first generation model.
