Not Receiving iMessage Notifications from One Contact on Any Device

I have an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and a MacBook Pro. I send and receive iMessages with all of them. Everything was fine until a couple days ago, when I no longer received any iMessage notifications from a specific contact.

It would seem the system thinks I'm reading the messages, even though I am not, as I don't recall seeing an unread message indicator when opening Messages. I have always had Read Receipts disabled, if that makes any difference.


Troubleshooting steps that have been taken are as follows:

  1. My devices are up to date
  2. Do Not Disturb/Focus is turned off
  3. We both restarted our devices
  4. The other person updated their iPhone to the latest version
  5. I disabled and re-enabled iMessage on my iPhone via Settings > Messages
  6. I hid, then showed their alerts with the Hide Alerts feature
  7. I disabled and re-enabled Messages notifications


I would like to avoid deleting the message thread at all costs.

I was planning on doing that, but I just discovered the solution!


Figured I would post what worked for me in the hopes that any others with a similar issue now or in the future might be able to resolve it more easily.


  1. I powered off each device with iMessage enabled (in my case, Apple Watch, iPad, and MacBook Pro) except the iPhone
  2. I proceeded to have the contact send me a message-I got the notification!
  3. Then, I powered on each device individually and had the person send another message each time to make sure no specific one introduced an issue (might've been overkill since it was working again but I wanted to be 100% certain)


The order in which I powered them on was Apple Watch, iPad, MacBook Pro.

Messages from this person are coming through (with notifications again, finally) perfectly now!

You completed some great steps to help resolve this! If you haven't already, delete the contact and add it back to see if that helps: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
