External keyboard missing keystrokes (Logitech MK270)

I have an inexpensive Logitech Keyboard (MK270) and mouse. It works perfectly on my PC but when connected to my macbook pro 2020 (Big Sur 11.1) via a USB hub (the keyboard and mouse share a wireless USB connection) the mouse is a little bit glitchy and the keyboard is basically unusable (misses keystrokes ~15-20% of the time, stops responding for ~10 seconds at a time).

Has anyone experienced this and figured out a fix? And/or does anyone know if it is more likely to be an issue with the computer, the USB hub, or the keyboard? I can replace the keyboard if need be but don't have a large budget for a magic keyboard or other expensive alternative. Thanks!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.1

Hi, brooneys,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're using a Logitech USB keyboard and mouse with your Mac through a USB-hub, and have noticed that there seems to be some latency with input. We're happy to help!

Based on your described setup, the first thing we would suggest is connecting your keyboard and mouse directly to your Mac and seeing if the issue persists. If it does, restart into safe mode and test again: How to use safe mode on your Mac. Should you continue to experience the issue after testing in safe mode, try another user account: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support.

Have a lovely day!

Hey there, Brendan,

Thanks for getting back in touch with the additional information!

Are you using a USB-C to USB adapter, like the one here: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple, or a full USB hub with other peripherals connected as well?

If you're using a hub with other peripherals, try the following steps:

  1. Shut down the Mac: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Disconnect all peripherals (including the keyboard and mouse receiver)
  3. Restart the Mac
  4. Connect just your Logitech receiver and see if the issue persists

If it continues, try safe mode. After that, you will need to reach out to Logitech for further assistance: Submit a request – Logitech Support + Download.

Best!

Hi Lindsay_B,

Thanks for your reply. The keyboard only connects via its wireless USB connector. Because the macbook pro only has USB-C connections, there is no way to connect the keyboard without it going first through the USB Hub.

Do you therefore suggest that I skip the first step you outlined of trying to connect it directly and just proceed into testing it in safe mode? (I have already tried it on two different user profiles and the problem exists on both).

Thanks,

Brendan
