How to control Apple TV with 1st gen iPad Mini without Remote app?

I have an old 1st generation iPad Mini running the latest iOS it is eligible for (9.3.6).

I would like to use it to control our Apple TV. Problem is that Apple eliminated the “Remote” app and there is no Apple TV remote in Control Center in this version of iOS.

Is there any way to use this iPad Mini to control an Apple TV? Maybe there is a way to install the old standalone Remote App, for example? Or any other way? I get that it’s an old device, but it still works and could still serve a useful purpose.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Unfortunately, that is not possible with that 2012 iPad.

  • The App Store version of the software remote was removed from the App Store in mid 2020. Already installed apps may continue to work on older iOS versions, but new downloads are not possible anymore.
  • The Control Center widget software remote was/is available with iOS 11 or later, not iOS 9.

You may have to use the regular physical remote, or a newer Apple mobile device.

If you do not have that (anymore), then you can buy a replacement remote.

Replacement remotes will have to be paired or linked again.
