I just got this MacBook Pro M1 Max and although my account is administrator, it doesn't have read write permission to my internal Macintosh HD. It's been about 2 weeks now and it's frustrating to have a brand new computer that keeps denying basic folder functions. Attempts to add my user to Users & Groups for the hard drive fail with message of not having necessary permission.

I was on a chat with an agent and he said to backup, erase and reinstall MacOS. Is there no other way to fix the permission issue? If I have to back up then I'll need an external drive that comes with read write permission for MacOS and Windows.

Your user data with r/w permissions is the "Macintosh HD - Data." The SSV ( "Macintosh HD" ) is a r/ only .

Finder does not necessary make this clear—it presents the interaction as Macintosh HD.

Okay,
I'm new to MacOS and I'm thinking of Windows where you can create folders in the C:\ folder, not having to go the desktop and C:\users\user folder

Thanks

I have macOS Monterey 12.1 and it's new out of the box. It's not an upgrade as mentioned in the article about macOS Catalina.

Understood.

The two Volume read only was introduced back in Catalina in 2019... and continues today which includes Big Sur and your Monterey.

Do you have access to your Home/User folder when logged into your account...(?) Then everything is working as expected.

You can not write to the Macintosh HD. It is Sealed See the diagram above macOS 12 Boot Structure.

You can see the Drive layout from the Terminal.app copy and paste:

diskutil list internal

You can not write to the Macintosh HD ( APFS Snapshot ⁨com.apple.os.update-...⁩)

You can r/w to your Macintosh HD - Data

If I am missing something here, and you still have an issue— then restate the problem for more insight
