upgraded from Mohave to Big Sur

Thanks for your response, unfortunately I missed as it sit went to junk mail. When I started up my iMac holding the power button for 20 seconds I got the Apple logo and the bar below only gets as far as half way after waiting 10 minutes
Please hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds and it should start up. If it does not, please describe what you are seeing on the display.
Not good, your startup drive may have failed. Please see if you can boot into the recovery partition.
Thanks for your reply, I can start in safe mode but not sure how to boot into the recovery partition
Hold down Command + R on startup to book into the Recovery Partition.
When I do that I get the message "There was a problem connecting to the server "Johns – airport – time – capsule local” which is strange because in safe mode I could access the Time Capsule.
