My Apple Pay is not working when holding near a card reader

My Apple Pay is not working when holding near a card reader. I have put my card on the wallet app and when I pay through Apple Pay on websites it processes, however, when I go to hold my phone near the card reader it won't recognise it and the transaction will not process. Do you know why this is ?
