Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to see the percentage in Control Center. To display the percentage on the home screen, install the Battery widget. See: Use widgets on your iPhone and iPod touch - Apple Support

Battery life indicator ... Any hints? No battery level indications over time and supposedly last charged next year some time!! System date and time are still accurate. And although last charged to only 56% (reportedly), current battery level is 88%. Will turning it off and on help?
