Transfer photos from iphone to pc

A long standing problem for me is transferring photos and other files from iphone to Windows PC. Why would I want to store my photos from my PC on the tiny amount of memory in Phone? Yet, this is a default setting in iTunes. I don't want to store my photos/videos in iCloud (with a limit of 5gb), then transfer them later, bit by bit, to the PC. This is a ridiculously complicated method, and takes too long for video clips. How do I transfer my videos directly from my phone to using a USB cable PC? iTunes is one the most difficult to understand apps I have ever attempted to use...please tell me there is a better way without a subscription to some other bottleneck.
