Force a password change on next login

I am just configuring a couple of laptops for friends with new images of macOS 12.1.0. I have setup accounts with default (very insecure) passwords and want to ensure that each user is prompted to change their password upon initial login.

It seems that back in the days of OS X ~10.11 there was a tickbox that allowed this (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7552095?answerId=7552095021#7552095021), however no matter where I hunt, with cmd depressed or not, there does not appear to be such an option in macOS Monterey (12.1.0).

Can someone more experienced enlighten me - is there e commandline approach to achieving this user account configuration with a forced password change on next login?

You have to use Apple's Mobile Device Management to create a profile that requires that.

Is that the only account on the Mac? If so, just install the OS and shut down. Let them create their own account. If you want them to create a secure password, then you'll have to go the router of the MDM profile.
