Claiming 3 months free trial of Apple TV+ after purchase

On the webpage advertising the offer Apple has posted these instructions:

You can start your 3 months free subscription to Apple TV+ after setting up your new Apple product. Here's how to redeem your offer:

 Turn on your new Apple device and sign in with your Apple ID.

 Open the Apple TV app. Make sure your device is running the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, or macOS.

 The offer should be presented immediately after launching the app. If not, go to the  Apple TV+ tab where you'll see the offer.

 Tap Enjoy 3 Months Free.

The standard invitation is indeed seven days, but did you sign in to your account in the Apple TV app? If so was there an offer there for you?

I just bought a MacBook Air computer and got an email stating I could watch AppleTV for 3 months for free. BUT when I try I get an Apple TV page that says I can sign up for a free 7 days trial then pay $4.99 a month. That is not what I was offered by email.
