How do I access my mailboxes that I can't see but I still have?

I got a message from Apple a few days ago telling me I needed to agree to something if I wanted to keep using my computer. Involved changing my apple id and password. It was something I had been wanting to do for a long time since I could ditch my .mac id and replace it with a .cloud id. Now I can't see any of my mailboxes but I know they're there somewhere. I know this sounds pretty stupid but I can't describe it any better.

By what method was this message received. ? Was there a link in that message ? Was this a valid and Official message from Apple or some Spammer or other bad actor posting as Apple ?
