HDMI not working correctly

Trying to hook up my new 2021 M1 14" MacBook Pro to my 2010 Sanyo DP42740 TV via the HDMI port. It's technically working and I have control of the display to adjust color and was able to get sound going to it. The problem is it just isn't smooth. Videos won't play correctly whether on the computer or online. If the video itself is actually playing it might have a 1hz framerate (not a typo). The sound is choppy as well. Even just trying to move windows doesn't really work.

Like I said, it's technically working but it's practically useless.

I did try messing with the resolution and mirror vs extended. I'm borrowing the cable from my ~2018 Roku which I've had absolutely no problems with. Anything else I can try?

If you get a reasonable picture on the TV display, this is not an HDMI issue.

Your computer is VERY busy doing something else, and you will need to figure out WHAT.

I recommend you use this little "discovery" program called Etrecheck, to generate a report and share it in a reply on the forums:

More than anything, you need to update your MacOS to the current (12.1) and restart your Mac more often. You are currently in memory deficit, and those two solutions may solve what ails your Mac. It has crashed seven times recently.

You also need to develop a backup plan, and obtain an external drive for it, unless you are already using something other than Time Machine.

There is no such thing as "just" running Chrome. Chrome is the biggest resource hog in modern History. Its maker feels no shame in having such a poor-performing product in the Mac Market, because they make a ton of money selling your info.

If you can switch to Firefox or Safari, both have been updated more recently and have a much smaller resource footprint and are measurably faster.
