You appear to make reference to the “Shelf” - this being a new feature of the now revised iPadOS multitasking environment.
iPadOS permits you to have multiple “instances” of the same App - each instance being self contained. The shelf, when triggered, shows a thumbnail of each running instance of an App - or open page within it.
For example, if you have three running instances of Mail, or individual open messages, you will see three thumbnails that correspond to each running instance or open email - plus a button to open another. Simply tapping a thumbnail will switch directly to that open page. Each App has its own corresponding shelf.
This article from Appleinsider has a useful explanation of this new feature along with many of the updates to multitasking:
The iPad User Guide is also a rich source of frequently overlooked information. The Guide is available both online using a web browser (such as Safari), or as an Apple Books download:

You should note that the shelf is an integral component of the multitasking User Interface. It cannot be disabled.
P.S. Also need to fix/disable iPad spellchecker—it’s constantly dubbing in words I did not type! I typed “enquiry” not “enquirer” and just now it did it again even with the quote marks.
This is terrible why does Apple do this lame stuff and not give us a way to disable it? Time to go back to Spark.
Oh, thanks for the solution. I tried every which way to fix this and finally your answer told me how. I could see it could be useful in some circumstances but now it was just a-nnoy-ing.
Yes, and the most annoying idea to screw with the minds of users who just got used to the last bunch of annoying changes wins.
Email images keep showing on bottom of my email page on iPad
Wish I had an answer. I don’t like it either, but Apple considers it a “feature.” I am just ignoring them most of the time.
How do I get rid of those boxes at the bottom of my email page permanently
I also find it totally distracting and not useful. And I am having a hard time getting the icons to swipe up to get rid of them.
Also, the shown thumbnails in mail are months old.
New iPad has a line of email windows at the bottom of the screen, how do I get rid of them?
I’m so sorry but no I hadn’t read the recommendation at the top of the thread as it didn’t show on my screen but following your reply I did find it, so thank you for the lesson.
It did not show on my screen either, and it still is not showing. I’ve no idea how to make it show up. Here is a screenshot of the top of the thread on my iPad:
If you scroll down, you’ll see all the responses - the second (in this case) being marked as Apple Recommended.
I can’t find your links or the Apple Recommended link.
Well who wants to have to do that all the time? I’d rather not have them there unless I set it up that way.
