Use iMac as Screen for my MacBook

Happy New Year Everyone,

I would like to use my iMac (5k, Retina, 2020 with macOS Monterey) as the 'screen' for my MacBook Pro. I remember doing this in the past with some older models but can't figure out how to do this now.

I tried connecting the two iMAC and the MacBook via a USB-C cable but the MacBook is just getting charged.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Best!

Can't do it. The last iMacs that could act as an external monitor for another Mac via Target Display Mode were introduced in Mid 2014. Yours is far too new. You can find full hardware and software requirements for TDM in this Apple article:

Apple began the deprecation of Target Display Mode in 2014 and threw the last shovel of dirt in its face in early 2020. It's dead.

I have an M1 24” iMac and it happily (separately) connects to either of my old monitors, one is via DVI to USB-C the other is VGA to USB-C. Both display at 1080 (HD). If you can get hold of an old monitor the adapters are cheap from places like Amazon and there is a good chance that they would work with a MacBook. .
