Links won't open from Gmail in Safari

When in the web version of Gmail in Safari, if I try to click on links in emails sent to me they won't open the linked item in a new tab. Instead, a generic home page tab is what opens. Previously, the link would open in the new tab. If I right click and select "open in new tab" the links open fine.

This behavior started several weeks ago. Initially I could restart my Mac (2021 MacBook Pro w/ M1 Pro) and the links would work again (i.e. take me to a new tab with the linked page displayed), but now that doesn't work - perhaps since downloading the latest Monterey update (12.1). It is for all links in email. Also, the same behavior happens if I try to print the email; normally it would open the email in a new tab and I could print it from that tab. Now there is no way to print the email. I'm not having this problem anywhere other than gmail, and the links work fine using other browsers.

Of note: If I open Gmail in Safari in a private browser window, the links will open properly in a new tab.

Thoughts?
