Very low volume of Apple Music on MacBook Pro (intel, macOS Monterey 12.1)

I have MacBook Pro 15 in 2016 with intel i7, macOS Monterey ver 12.1

When I listen to hi-res music using external DAC with amp, volume is just too low. Please find attached settings screenshot. I also tried with headphone jack and volume is still low. When I listen to same songs on Spotify without any hi-res, they sound so much better. Overall I think Apple Music on MacBook is really low quality. It needs to be addressed.

I have tried both options. I tested with direct built in speakers as well headphone jack but still very low sound. FYI, I am using this DAC: https://ifi-audio.com/products/hip-dac2/ that supports apple music hi-res lossless audio format. I have been able to enjoy music through iPhone. When DAC detects hi-res lossless track, it displays white LED indicator. Here is the track: https://music.apple.com/us/album/spill-the-wine/1577590198?i=1577590199

this track plays fantastically on iPhone but absolutely low quality on MacBook Pro.

Hi, Himanhsu,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. We understand that the audio volume and quality while using Apple Music is not what you expect. We are happy to help!

To get started, we'd suggest taking a look through the information below from About lossless audio in Apple Music - Apple Support to make sure you are set up as expected with lossless audio compatible equipment:

"How to listen to lossless on your Mac

What you need

You can listen to lossless on a Mac updated to the latest version of macOS using:

  • A wired connection to headphones, receivers, or powered speakers
  • The built-in speakers
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro support native playback of songs at sample rates up to 96 kHz.
  • To listen to songs at sample rates higher than 48 kHz on other Mac computers, you need an external digital-to-analog converter."

You've mentioned that the issue appears while using a DAC and amp to listen to lossless audio, and also while using headphones connected to built-in headphone jack. If you have not already, see if it continues using the MacBook Pro's built-in speakers next.

Don't hesitate to respond back if you need more help.

Cheers!

HI Lindsay,

I have the same problem as Himanhsu.

I have connect my Mac (Macos Montery 12.0.1) to an external DAC with a USB connection

and I have a very low sound when i listen music with the DAC.

It is both when I listen to Spotify. But also with Youtube, etc.

I tried Losless but i see it only works when you have an apple music account, which i do not have.

Can you help me how to fix it?

Kind regards

willem

I’m having the EXACT same problem. I tried my AirPods Pros and Max’s on both my MacBook Pro and my phone (iPhone 12 Pro) and the difference in quality, bass punch, and the overall quality of tones coming out of my phone are drastically better than my MacBook. I may be mistaken, but I feel strongly that it wasn’t this way a month ago since I hook up my JBL Xtreme for the kids periodically on my MacBook Pro. Overall, I have noticed numerous glitches on my MacBook’s Apple Music, the sound quality, the Siri support, and one time an entire playlist disappeared. I was hoping it would stop on an update, but it’s only become worse in some kind of way.

I’m confident this isn’t on my end since I only use the computer for college classes and some occasional editing projects, but I firmly believe it’s not something that can be fixed with any standard changes in settings.

Thank you Lindsay. I have already tested my DAC with Spotify App, Netflix, youtube etc and there is no issue with volume at all and DAC just works fine. I have already checked the specs of DAC before buying and it does support ALAC 192 khz. I am wondering if. Macs have this as manufacturing defect with hardware or software. I will try direct support issue (if i am eligible).

Thanks for getting back in touch with us, Himanhsu,

Based on the additional information you've provided, we would suggest reaching out to the manufacturer of your DAC next to confirm its compatibility with your specific Mac model and macOS version: Support Desk | iFi audio.

If you still need help after that, please get in touch with Apple Support directly: Get Support.

Have a good day.
