phone calls over mac distorted

After the latest updates, whenever I answer a phone call via my iMac, the incoming audio is distorted and full of dropouts. No other voice communication software (zoom, slack, etc) is giving me this problem. And the outgoing audio is fine. Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks

iMac 27″, macOS 12.1

Hi. I had the same problem but now it is solved. I read the thread below and saw that somebody suggested plugging in headphones to see if the situation persisted. I plugged in my earbuds and the call was clear. Then I took them out and the sound over my MacBook Pro Speakers was absolutely fine. Not sure if this will do the trick for everybody, but it worked for me!

Hi Curkat, I just tried answering a call without using my external speakers and only using the internal speakers. I seemed to work just fine using the internal microphone and speakers. I also did try using my AirPods Pro and it also worked just fine. Seems to be some conflict with the External speaker port and software. For now I won't be using my Bose computer speakers for this to work. Hope it gets fixed with an update!

Fungible666,

Got it.

We'd recommend disabling the option to receive calls on your Mac on both your iPhone and your Mac, then re-enable it.

For iPhone this setting is under: Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices, then turn off Allow Calls on Other Devices.

For your Mac: Open the FaceTime app, then choose FaceTime > Preferences. Click Settings, then deselect Calls From iPhone.

After that, test the issue again. If the distortion persists, we'd recommend reaching out to Apple directly for additional assistance.

Take care.

Thanks. I have done all of that. Finally installed MacOS. No change. Then again but with additional intervention. I unpaired my AirPods Pro, went to audio/midi utility and changed sample rate 24 bit, 48Hz for both input and output. I also deleted virtual in/out for the app Jump Desktop. Should have done those things in stages, I know, but have had no problems since.

Same problem here, with iMac 2019 and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Tried something through terminal that fixed the problem for a while but it appears again. Made a call while I had open Audio MIDI setting and noticed that while calling the rate changes automatically to 44.1GHz. Then I turn it again to 48GHz and that fixes the sound.

Probably this is not the solution, this must be fixed.

Hi Fungible666,

We see when answering a phone call from your iPhone on your Mac, you experience distortion and dropped audio, is that correct?

To clarify, what was recently updated? Your iPhone to iOS 15 or your Mac to macOS Monterey? Also, just to clarify, if you take a phone call on your iPhone itself, does it also drop or distort the audio? How about with a pair of headphones in use on your Mac to take the call? We'd like to isolate as may variables as possible to help provide the best next steps.

Let us know, and we'll continue from there.

Cheers!

Have you tried a call with no headphones/AirPods connected, relying on the computer's internal microphone & speakers? I have had suspicions about a possible conflict with AirPods and the computer. I unpaired my AirPods from the computer and have been successfully using the internal speaker. Of course it is probably only a coincidence that it worked. I have not tried to recreate the problem, as I know I should, for fear that I'll be spending another afternoon trying to get it to work.
