After periodically seeing rows of question marks in boxes appear in place of text on web pages and in some emails, I finally had time to try to fix it. When I went to Font Book, there were no fonts listed, zero. The file was last modified on January 1 at 3 a.m., and not by me. Can anybody please help?

Shut down and restart is always a good thing to try whenever you have a problem. For font issues, doing File > Restore Standard Fonts in the Font Book app is often the fix.

Make sure you have All Fonts selected In the left most column.
Do File > Restore Standard Fonts
